Lessons
Piano tuition
Every student learns differently, so I shape each lesson around the individual — their goals, musical tastes, and learning style. Some students come wanting to play Mozart, others want to master their favourite film themes or learn jazz. Whatever the aim, we build a plan that makes progress feel natural and rewarding.
I teach both children and adults, from complete beginners to more advanced pianists preparing for exams or performances.
Lessons focus on developing a solid technique, musical understanding, and confidence at the piano. Depending on the student, we might explore areas such as:
Classical repertoire — from Bach and Beethoven to Debussy and beyond
Popular songs and film music
Jazz harmony and improvisation
Sight-reading, aural skills, and theory in a practical way
- Exam preparation (ABRSM or alternatives), when desired
My teaching style is supportive but structured — I believe learning the piano should feel inspiring, not intimidating. Students are encouraged to bring in pieces they love, while I introduce new music to keep things fresh and challenging. Above all, I want lessons to be something you look forward to each week.
Music Theory tuition
Understanding music theory is essential for all instrumentalists, not just pianists. I provide tailored music theory lessons for students of any instrument and ability, whether they are preparing for graded exams or simply want to deepen their musical knowledge.
For students aiming for ABRSM grades 6 and above on their instrument, Grade 5 Theory is a prerequisite — I can guide you through everything from the basics up to exam-level skills. Lessons are interactive and practical, showing how theory directly applies to the music you play.
For students who study piano with me, music theory is typically incorporated in the lesson. For students specifically requesting theory lessons, I offer music theory lessons from Grades 1 to 8, and fees are the same as piano tuition. You can find full details and lesson options on the Fees page.
Where I teach
I teach from my studio in Hove, a comfortable, quiet, and fully equipped space designed for focused, enjoyable learning.
For students who prefer lessons at home, I can also travel to nearby areas by prior arrangement. Home visits are subject to availability and location.
I also offer online lessons using a high-quality setup with an HD webcam and professional microphone. Lessons can be taken fully in person, fully online, or as a hybrid arrangement to suit individual needs and schedules.
Lesson FAQs
What ages and levels do you teach?
I teach both children and adults, from complete beginners to more advanced players. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, whether learning for fun, exams, or performance.
How long is a lesson, and how often should I schedule?
Lessons can be 30, 45, or 60 minutes long. Most students take weekly lessons, but the frequency can be adjusted to suit your schedule and learning pace.
How is progress assessed?
Progress is monitored in every lesson. For exam students, we work through the syllabus; for others, we set achievable goals and review them regularly to ensure lessons remain motivating and rewarding.
Am I too old to start learning?
Absolutely not! Many adults take piano lessons, some starting in their retirement. Adults often learn faster than children because they are self-motivated. It is never too late to start.
Do I have to take exams?
Not if you don’t want to. Exams (like ABRSM) can be great for motivation and tracking progress, but many of my students play purely for pleasure. We will structure lessons around YOUR goals.
Can I change lesson times if needed?
Yes — if you give at least 24 hours’ notice, I’ll do my best to reschedule within the same term. Lessons missed without notice are charged in full.
Do I have to learn music theory?
We integrate theory naturally into lessons as we go, so it never feels like a dry academic subject. For beginners and casual players, it’s just about understanding what you are playing. However, please note that ABRSM strictly requires a pass in Grade 5 Theory before you can take Grade 6+ practical piano exams. I offer formal tuition in music theory from Grades 1-8.
